A gamified financial insight dashboard
With my company Yellowtail BV.

Project Goal
Designing a financial insights dashboard where users can play with different scenarios and explore their future income based on their choices and habits.
My role
Designing the whole product from scratch. I had complete freedom as the only designer in this product to come up with a dashboard where users can play with scenarios.
Team
Me (UX Designer), Business analysts, Product Owner, FE Developers.
🚩 The problem
PGB wants to give users to option to plan their future finances. But we do not want to do this in a classic and boring way. We want it to be engaging so users will actually play with scenarios and will continue to make investment choices based from their insight here. Therefore, we created this dashboard. The problems PGB wanted to solve were:
  • Most customers do not engage with traditional financial graphs,
  • Pension and retirement seems like far away so people do not take the time to play around with scenarios,
  • Most dashboards put partner finances out of the scenario,
  • Retirement finances is not a one time thing, but it is something people should continously adjust based on their life events, for example your finances changing after buying a home.
🎯 Goal
To create a financial insights dashboard where

  • It is interesting and engaging for all age groups
  • It is something unique and fun that people could actually explore the scenarios without an advisor
  • Users can come back later and continue to play in the dashboard. It is not a one time decision.
✍️ Approach
Here is a short explanation of how we approached the problem, and how our process looked like.

We aim to understand the user together with business to see what they want to achieve via this dashboard.
🧑Understand the user
User Persona
We created user persona together with the insight from business. There are multiple personas, since there are multiple groups interested in planning their future finances.
How can we best meet users needs? We brainstorm, ideate solutions, and define how are going to execute it.
💡 Ideate & Define
Ideation - Gamification
I laid out multiple ideas and we went through them together in the sessions. I was pushed for more -out of the box- thinking and gamification was our focus.
Time to make it into something real. Collaborating extensively with developers for feasibility and consistency.
🚀 Execute
Aligning with developers
I have done sessions with developers to look at the designs I have. Which components need tweaking? Anything does not exist in style guide?
Qualitative Analysis
I have worked together with our financial consultants to gather more information on what different user groups need and want to achieve with this dashboard.
Wireframing
I have designed wireframes to further visually illustrate to non-design background stakeholders how my ideas would look like.
Handoff
Handing off the components/screens to developers to they can start with building. Used Zeplin in this case.
User Flow
We mapped out a user flow together with the business, since multiple user groups come to this portal from multiple different places. And users need to log in.
Prototyping & UI design
I created desktop and mobile prototypes using the brand style guide/design system and shared this demo with stakeholders.
Review / Tweaks
Communicating with the stakeholders the final designs, and following the progress of the pushed features to if any tweaks are needed.
🙋‍♂️ What users needed, what I have designed.
Since our gamified dashboard visually and conceptually a pretty new concept, I have implemented a walkthrough in the onboarding. Our avatar here helps users to understand what is in the dashboard, and how can they explore scenarios. User can skip this if they want to.
👋 Walkthrough for a smooth onboarding

Users begin with their current situation, what they earn today and what they will earn as they retire. With tooltips they are able to learn more about what every amount covers.

Below in the cards, they are
triggered with stickers to play with the scenarios to explore situations. This will enable them to see how their income will be influenced based on their financial choices, spending habits, or extra incomes.
🧭 Your income as of today, and financial scenarios to explore.
pgbp3.png
When users add/explore situations from below, the cards become completed. However, with toggles, they are still able to play with them and hide a scenario if they want. This way their dashboard is dynamic, and they are quickly able to see the specific difference a scenario makes.
🧠 Good busy with exploration!

Users now have a new path to their future finances. This way, they are able to see what will happen on different dates, with or without their partners, and examine in detail their incomes per every event. They are still able to play and explore further, or come back later to add a new insight.
💸 This is your future income, as you planned it!

🕺 The end.
This product just went live in December 2022.
  • Business is currently analysing the data per first month.
  • We are also planning a qualitative user test to see where we can still tweak it with qualitative insights.
I really enjoyed designing this product as it enabled me to be creative, gamify a concept about finances, and think outside of the box.
